Three Problem Solving Tools - Anthropological methods, especially close observation and detailed description and documentation of behaviour (discussed in chapter 2) - Anthropological concepts, which help in understanding and comparing what observed behaviours, such as rites of passage and reciprocity, mean to other people - Anthropolgical theories which aim to explain why human beings organize their experiences into meaningful categories in the ways that we do - Solutions to problems can benefit from an anthropological persepctive because they all involve ways that people give meaning to their experiences Applied Anthropology - is the subdiscipline of anthropology that specializes in putting athropological knowledge into practice outside of academia Indigenous Issues - Julia Harrison and Regna Darnell argued that although the growth of anthropology has been influenced by European and American traditions, the difference in Canadian disciplinary tradition is strong focus on Indigenous peoples - People are more willing to cooperate with researchers if they are able to see that the work has some direct reveleance to their lives - 2006 Grand River Land Dispute- bring greater public awarness to a 40 hectare plot of land granted to indigenous peoples which was claimed to have been purchased by coperations
