Lecture 10 – Collaborative Work November 15, 2017 Video: There is an innate rhythm that enables productivity and enables survival o The rhythm is not forced to be made, but is developed naturally o Percussion sounds can be made within the environment, leading to the idea that wealth is not a factor when thinking about being able to make rhythm Information on the paper: o Community music therapy of for working with people in the township o Therapy there to induce inclusion of individuals with mental health disorders; there to break stereotypes o Goal is not to preform, and music therapy does not include performing South Africa: Music therapy clinic for the community o Purpose: To provide disadvantaged communities (people living in severe poverty, gang violence present, HIV/AIDS, fragmentation and disintegration of many communities) o Aims to keep kids off the streets, and preventing gang violence o Children who were targeted affected family structure o Therapists did not provide the music themselves because they were not familiar with the music (cannot be authentically engaged) o Barrier: Kids spoke English, but was not their first language, thus emphasized collaboration and engagement o Stigma arose when children from school were sent to music therapy Teachers and staff ensured that this kind of negative stigma was eliminated Thus, the MFL engaged all into music, and remove the negative connotation of therapy Therapy was co-led: musician and therapist present Music activities are co-led or monitored by a music therapist Although the music therapy session involves playing music, the therapist will say the process matters o However, the music playing leader will say the product is important o We should, therefore, look at both o Need to make children feel like they have a sense of belonging Music therapists are accomplished musician Used surveys to gather data on determining the best use of resources Helps rebuild identity, develop a sense of being a part of a culture o The lack of shared history was something the music therapist would have not been able to bring to the table o Musician perspective: There is no “should” in a therapeutic process (****?) Educated to put the need of themselves aside (they are there for the kids and NOT themselves) Culture is NOT a static entity; culture is influenced through our societal changes (Good Exam Question) Two roles of the music therapist: Facilitated behaviours that came up
