Basque of Northern Spain, Kurds, Abkhazians, Ossetians, Palestinians, Kosovars Sovereign states never ever willingly give up territory (Alaska and Louisiana Purchase: Long time ago and not cheap) Never give up territory b/c you never know what the territory might be worth, strategic value, resources below, can’t predict future geopolitical situations, never give up territory that might attack you or get taken over by an enemy later How does one become a sovereign state? Territory, government, a leader, a constitution describing state and functioning, army, police, economy, a flag? Don’t need any of it: Only need sovereignty
Speaking of Sovereignty Sovereignty: Quality of having supreme independent authority over a territory, no other power or gov’t or individual can supersede the actions of the rulers of the state (gov’ts actions cannot be overruled) How to prove you have sovereignty? Kill you own citizens, if you can do the most extreme thing and get away with it, you must have the ultimate authority.
