InstructionBP 6185(a)COMMUNITY DAY SCHOOLThe Board of Education recognizes the need to provide an appropriate alternative educationalprogram for expelled students who are prohibited from attending regular schools in thedistrict and for certain students referred by probation or district processes. The district'scommunity day school program shall be designed to meet the needs of these students andensure academic progress necessary for their success when returned to a regular schoolenvironment.The Board perceives the community day school as a flexible component of a comprehensiveeffort to meet the needs of expelled and other at-risk students.In order to foster positive attitudes and academic progress, the Board recognizes thatcommunity day schools must give students substantial individual help with their problems.Community day school staff shall collaborate with district counselors, psychologists, andother support staff and with the county office of education, law enforcement, probation, andhuman services agency staff who work with at-risk youth. To the extent possible, communityday school programs shall provide a low student-teacher ratio, individualized instruction andassessment, as well as maximum collaboration with district support service resources,including, but not limited to, school counselors and psychologists, academic counselors, andstudent discipline personnelThe Superintendent or designee shall establish procedures for the involuntary transfer ofstudents to a community day school in accordance with law and administrative regulation.The Superintendent or designee may require community day school students to attend schoolfor up to seven days each week in a directed program designed to provide students with theskills and attitudes necessary for success when they are returned to a regular schoolenvironment.A community day school shall not be situated on the same site as a regular districtelementary, middle, junior high, comprehensive senior high, opportunity, or continuationschool, except when allowed by law and administrative regulation, and when the Boardcertifies by a two-thirds vote that no satisfactory alternative facilities are available for thecommunity day school. Such Board certification shall be valid for not more than one schoolyear and may be renewed by a subsequent two-thirds vote of the Board.
