image of the company in the public eye. The result of this could lead customers to doubt the company. Whether it be the products they sell or services they provide, the reflection of a company’s inability to hire competent employees results in a taint on Kohl’s. Kohl’s positive repute is most likely why it has survived and thrived for the past few decades. In 2013, Michelle Gass who originally worked with Starbucks, was hired as Kohl’s Chief Customer Officer. Her experience and extensive knowledge were qualities that the company greatly needed in order to grow. “ Indeed, one of Gass’s first major projects at Kohl’s was to build Yes2You... Gass says that 30 million shoppers have already signed up for the program. Half of those were not already Kohl’s credit card holders, meaning the retailer is finally attracting new shoppers again” (Wahba). When Kohl’s hired Michelle Gass to be part of the company team, their choice reflected on the positive result the company had made. Their decision on hiring Gass demonstrated that by surrounding the company with competent and intelligent people, Kohl’s was able to improve different sectors of the company. For example, Kohl's has seen real strength lately in activewear, not a traditional department-store cornerstone. Gass broadened the merchandise mix in this category. As mentioned in the quotes, since hiring Gass, Kohl’s has witnessed a tremendous turnaround for the company. They have been able to grow their product assortment and attract new customers bringing in more profits for the company. When a prince’s personal staff is incompetent, the country and the prince himself may be faced with problems that confront his intelligence, choices that he makes, and future of the Mo 4

Kohl’s adheres to this guideline, and displays that their capability to hire and surround themselves with qualified employees, brought success and a more positive reputation of Kohl’s. Because of Gass’s actions and improvements, Kohl’s brought in a significant amount of revenue compared to the year before Gass was hired. With the programs and changes implemented by Gass, the company brought in about $181 million net sales increase the following year (Yes2You Rewards). Adhering to Machiavelli’s idea, Kohl’s surrounds the company with competent employees, and as a result we could see a positive growth when these employees performed well. Threats from within a group can be more disastrous than from external attacks. In The Prince , Machiavelli’s guideline suggests that a prince take caution and be concerned about “internal subversion from his subjects; and external aggression by foreign powers” (Machiavelli, 59). A prince must take a step back to analyze not only those who he trusts the most, but also any
