consequences. To a certain extent, that is living presently, which is good. But for Stella, it has caused a lot of havoc in her life. To present the gospel to her and say that if accept Jesus, you can be with Him someday in heaven, would maybe not work because it is in the future. Direct vs. indirect- “Direct communicators are often frustrated by what they perceive as obtuse, unclear communication from their intercultural counterparts. And indirect communicators are offended by what sounds like a blunt, rude style from some Westerners.” For 7 me, I like direct communication. You can say it like it is to me. I can handle it. But for a culture like Stella’s, they would find that offensive. So in my presenting of the gospel to her, I would need to be gentle about it and come at it from a more indirect way. difficult because I am more of a person who speaks more bluntly to people too. I know the Lord would give me the right words. “The Holy Spirit will give you the words to say at the moment when you need them.” (Luke 12:12, New International Version) Universalism vs. particularism - “Universalist cultures believe there are rules for everyone and no one gets to ignore them…Particularist cultures believe we have special obligations to people we know.” In Stella’s culture, a particularist culture would abound. How 8 could we not make an exception this one time and take her to town to buy “food”? You want to be kind, right? But the last time we took her to town, she stayed there and started hanging out with her old friends and got alcohol and got drunk. I think the question that we had to be constantly asking was, “What would Jesus do?” Being vs. doing- “Emphasis on quality of life… Emphasis on being busy and meeting goals.” I see some of this cultural value in the culture that Stella is in. More of a being 9 culture than a doing culture. It does not seem like they plan a lot for the future. They rather live more in the present and only think about now. This is very similar to short term vs. long term in that it can sometimes happen where they do not think about the damage that what they are doing, particularly alcohol or drugs, will affect their children or the future of their community. Neutral vs. affective- “In neutral-oriented cultures, people make a great effort to control how they express their emotions. People try not to reveal what they’re thinking or how they’re feeling. In affective cultures, people want to find ways to express their emotions, even [Livermore, David (2019). Leading with Cultural Intelligence, Second Edition (p. 123).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
