o Tibia Aka shin bone; larger, medial, weight-bearing bone of the leg; second longest bone of the body Articulates at proximal end w/ femur and fibula and at distal end w/ fibula and talus bone of ankle Tibia and fibula are connected by interosseous membrane Most frequently fractured and is also most frequent site of compound fracture Surface Features Lateral and medial condyles proximal end; articulate w/ condyles of femur to form lateral and medial knee joints o Inferior surface of lateral condyle articulates w/ head of fibula Intercondylar eminence upward projection that separates the condyles Tibial tuberosity anterior surface; bump that sticks out and is palpable in knee; point of attachment for patellar ligament Anterior border inferior and continuous w/ tibial tuberosity; aka shin—shaft of tibia Medial malleolus medial surface of distal end of tibia; articulates w/ talus of ankle Fibular notch articulates w/ distal end of fibula to form distal tibiofibular joint o Fibula Slender, splint-like bone that is slightly expanded at both ends; developmental counterpart of ulna; parallel and lateral to tibia but is considerably smaller Does NOT articulate w/ femur and is non weight-bearing; helps stabilize ankle joint Surface Features Head proximal end and articulates w/ inferior surface of lateral condyle of tibia below knee joint to form proximal tibiofibular joint Lateral malleolus distal end; projection that articulates w/ talus of ankle Also articulates w/ tibia and fibular notch to form distal tiofibular joint o Tarsals Proximal region of foot and consists of 7 bones; much greater in size than the carpal bones—talus and calcaneus are significantly larger than distal counterparts Intertarsal joints between tarsal bones Articulate w/ tibia and fibula via talus Surface Features Talus and calcaneus posterior part of foot; calcaneus is largest and strongest tarsal bone

o Talus is the most superior; fits inside of medial and lateral malleolus of tibia and fibula; sits at a hinge joint; only bone of tarsals that articulates w/ tibia and fibula Transmits abt half of the weight of body to calcaneus and rest to other tarsals Anterior tarsal bones 3 rd (lateral), 2 nd (intermedial), and 1 st (medial) cuneiforms and cuboid o Metatarsals Intermediate region of foot; 5 bones numbered 1-5; convex dorsally and concave on plantar surface Surface Features Each consists of a proximal base, intermediate shaft, and distal head Articulate proximally with 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd cuneiform bones and w/ cuboid to form tarsometatarsal joint Articulate distally w/ proximal row of phalanges to for metatarsophalangeal joints First metatarsal is thicker than the others bc it bears more weight o Phalanges Comprise distal component of foot and resemble those of the hand; numbered 1-5 beginning w/ big toe (hallux) Each consists of proximal base, intermediate shaft, and distal head
