goes on to his final reason why people crave horror movies, which is people enjoy horror moviesbecause it appeals to “the worst in us.” In other words, King is stating people enjoy watching others in danger or be killed. King explains how throughout our childhood we are taught what is right and wrong by either being rewarded with that “chocolate-covered graham cracker” or
punished with “a spanking.” But, somehow the bad part of us remains because we find enjoyment through these horror movies. King uses examples such as Freda Jackson, a truckload of dead babies, and Jack the Ripper as ways to prove how we applaud these sort of horrific storylines. When King wrote this essay, he was probably writing to adolescents and adults who enjoy watching horror movies. King sets the tone of his article to where it’s cynical and humorous. In a way, it is almost creepy and scary. Although I disagree with King’s point, I enjoyed how he set that tone for the readers. Because it is scary and insane to know that there arepeople who enjoy watching others be tortured and killed. This idea of people will make me question someone when I go to watch a horror movie. I will find myself looking over my shoulder to find that one person who is smirking while watching people get killed. Even though King has some convincing evidence such as the joke about the truckload of babies, I still do not agree with his reason. The reason why I do not agree with King’s idea of why people crave horror movie is because of my own experience. When I go to watch a horror film, it is not because I enjoy watching others be killed off. I appreciate the writer’s imagination and creativity of these make-believe monsters or characters. Also, I know that the movies are not real, and the actors who were killed off are all fine and alive. WORD COUNT: 506
