Hindu art often shows how different concepts are connected to each other. For example the Shiva Nataraja shows how one s dharma and samsara are related. ʼ In this piece, Shiva, part of the trinity, is portrayed holding fire and an hour glass. Shiva is the part of the trinity that is destruction. The fire represents the destructive energy Shiva has while doing his dance. The hour glass in his other hand represent time of destruction and then time of reconstruction of the new universe. This is samsara. Samsara is also evident in the ring of fire surrounding Shiva. his dharma. Shiva is accomplishing his dharma because he is completing samsara by destructing and reconstructing the universe. ! When looking at all these pieces together one can see how they all explain the main concepts of Hinduism. The Bhagavad Gita, Raga Dadra, and Shiva Nataraja all show the concepts of dharma and samsara. They explain an individual cannot have one without the other.
