Indirect speech - – emphasis is on politeness and positive public image – not literal truth (Asian cultures) Display rules – cultural rules that govern which non verbal behaviours are appropriate and which are inappropriate in a public setting – e.g. gestures Feedback – honest reflection vs. positive politeness – recognize that various cultures view feedback very differently Listening and Gender Men – tend to lecture, position themselves as superior, the expert – they want respect; men tend to use less listening cues, interrupt more, change the topic to more factual content Women – tend to listen more, inferior position, the non expert; women want to be liked – seek to build rapport and establish closer relationships; they use more listening cues, pay attention more and show interest – more people oriented. Increasing Listening Effectiveness Empathic listening - feel with the person, see the world as they see it, feel what they feel Objective listening – being more detached and analytical, Seek to understand the speaker’s thoughts and feelings Non judgmental listening – open minded & understanding
