increase physical activity do the following: Increase the percentage of people who report being physical activity by an average of 42% Increase caloric expenditure by an average of 16.3% Increase multiple types of physical activity Increase participants knowledge about physical activity Reduce risk factors of cardiovascular disease that are related to physical inactivity The problem: They are typically not easy to organize and require substantial planning, coordination and evaluation efforts to determine effectiveness
2.Mass Media Campaigns =Physical activity promotion programs the rely on messaging efforts to change physical activity behaviour through changes in knowledge, beliefs and attitudes What are they? Large scale efforts designed to transmit messages about physical activity to large non-specific audiences so anyone is considered a target Designed to increase physical activity by increasing knowledge and changing attitudes and beliefs Uses communication media exclusively. Including: newspapers, TV, radio and billboards Can rely on a single communications channel The problem: The task force found insufficient evidence to recommend mass media strategies for physical activity promotion Can be expensive May work for one type of activity outcome but not another 3.Classroom based Health education Programs=The processes through which people learn about personal health concepts and behaviours Characteristics of classroom health education programs: Provide knowledge and skills for healthy decision making Work at the individual level Usually include several components like tobacco use, nutrition, physical activity and focus on reducing chronic disease Teach behavioural skills, but have no added in class physical activity component Have clearly defined health goals Describe age appropriate norms Help students understand their own personal risks The problem: Scientific evidence does not support this method there is no sufficient evidence to prove it works May not be funded accurately Instructor not a role model
PA Promotion part 2 How do we change people’s behavior? Tell people to change (informational approach) Change the environments - environment matters (office job = lack of PA, farmer = lots of PA) Environment Approaches Built environment - Constructed structures that influence opportunities for PA Changing the built environment to enhance PA can do so in two areas: - Access - Urban Design and land use Access Creating more opportunities for PA in the environment Facilitating physically active behavior Ex: Access to PA at work (from textbook) (ex. Wearing comfy footwear to work) - Bicycle parking - Showers - Physically active “culture” (walking meetings) - Onsite fitness facilities - Incentivizes for gym memberships Environment Approaches Urban Design - Form, function, and appearance of the physical environment Land use - management, planning, and development of land Montreal Skating Rink Study What did they do?
