monopoly company which provide the GMO seeds. As a result, Monsanto own 11,000 patents and they can sue the farmers who use GMO seeds which is contaminated naturally in the nature and the Monsanto can control most of seeds on the agricultural market and they can make a lot ofmoney on this issue. 1B. In this problem, I believe the Ethics that Monsanto buying up all the seed companies is the Ethic of Egoism. They want to buy all the seed companies and turn those seeds into GMO seeds, so they can control all the market. Again, they think about the profit and monopoly trade for their company only. As we have seen on the movies, the Monsanto sues farmers because farmers used the Roundup ready GMO seed on their farm and it is violated the patenting seeds issue of the Monsanto company. 1C. Again, we can see the Monsanto is the company follows the Ethic of Egoism, they try to sue farmers for the infringed patented seeds. They just care for their company, their profit and nothing else except money and income for company. Early on, the films mention about one Canadian canola farmer, Percy Schmeiser, who went up against the Monsanto company, after company accused him of patent infringement. (Garcia, 2014). Percy Schmsiser explained when his grandparent came to this country, there was
Monsanto 4no such thing as chemical companies or seed companies, and most of the seed resource they havecomes from their own stock or borrowing from his neighbor (Garcia, 2014). When he used Round up on his canola field years after years, the Monsanto launched the lawsuit against him for obtain the genetically modified canola seed without license and patent. A farmer like Percy Schmeiser cannot fight Monsanto because the ideas of judge after two and half week of trail. There are three reasons for this debate. The first one is it did not matter how Monsanto’s genetic altered canola got into his field whether it causes pollinated or blew in by the wind, or any natural forces or farmer’s truck. Percy Schmeiser has violated Monsanto’s patent even though he did not want it happens (Garcia, 2004). The second is any farmer has regular conventional plant that cross pollinated with Monsanto genes, it violated Monsanto’s patent (Garcia, 2004). The third issue is never use Monsanto Roundup ready herbicide, it must come from the material of some plants there. “By cultivating a plant containing the patented gene and composed of the patented cells without licence, the appellants deprived the respondents of the full enjoyment of the monopoly.” (Makin, 2004). I believe most of the farmer cannot fight Monsanto on the seed patenting issues because it is the power of patent law over the farmer right and the farmer is too small to fight back to huge company. 1D. The way farmer fight Monsanto because they depend their reasons on the Ethic of Care. Farmers believe that the way Monsanto company sued them are unfair and unacceptable. Farmer have to fight back because they care for their traditional farming way will be interrupted by the GM plants, they care for their children, their business and the diversity of plants on their crops.
