1. Discuss how cultural diversity within the team supports patient-centered, culturally competent care. Cultural diversity within the team supports patient-centered, culturally competent care by ensuring delivery of health services are emphasized as priority to treat each individual patient as a unique person. “As the cultural competence movement in our society continues to develop, the goal is to increase health equality and reduce disparities by concentrating on people of color and other disadvantaged populations” (Schriefer, 2016). Culturally and linguistically diverse patients access healthcare services less than the majority populations and are confronted with different barriers such as language barriers, legal restrictions or differences in health beliefs. For example, a transgender admitted on a Medical-Surgical ward with a diagnosis of positive HIV who speaks and understands very little English. The care team must be culturally aware and support the patient in every capacity by ensuring a medical translator is available and compassion, safe, and quality care is rendered. In order to reduce discrepancies, the promotion of cultural competence
Organizational Leadership 12 in healthcare organizations must be an ethical and constitutional goal. Providing culturally competent healthcare for culturally and linguistically diverse patients within healthcare organizations and to examine their effects on selected outcome measures is paramount (Handtke et al., 2019). Subsequently, the care team aims to organize identified constituents into a model of culturally competent healthcare requirements. 2. Using one of the leadership theories below, discuss the leadership style you would utilize in developing your team: • transactional leadership • transformational leadership • emotional leadership • traditional leadership The leadership style I would utilize to develop my team would be the transformational leadership. Not only do I have high performance expectation, but I’m capable of inspiring and empowering my peers, superiors and subordinates. As a transformational leader, I am confident that I am able to motivate my multidisciplinary team to commit themselves to organizational objectives and to realize performance outcomes, which exceed beyond expectations ( Steinmann, 2018). As a profession in arms, I lead by example. I will never ask of something that I am not willing to do myself, and I demonstrate through actions and not by words. As a transformational leader, one must be flexible and able to adapt leadership styles to chaos and rapid change that occurs in such situation. Being able to empower my team to have a vision about the organization and to trust that my team will work towards the same goals to benefit the organization and themselves. I am capable of sharing power to motivate my team to excel by inspiring them to be part of the organization’s vision. 3. Discuss how the team will work together to implement the strategy to address the weakness identified in part C1.
