changed that were noticeable to him. This makes him see that time is going faster than he thought, and he returned to reality. S The speaker, E.B White, is a lead American essayist. Showing that a personal narrative is not something people would expect of him. White was pushed to write this because he saw a relapse of his own childhood memories, a desire to relive and show his son those memories. White wanted to reflect it to other families who didn’t have the opportunity to have traditions he himself had. T E.B White manipulated his tone through a relaxing and calming voice. White was also very specific, describing everything exceptionally well. White used this tone to slow down time, creating a point where “ time was pausing” in his words. On the contrary, he also describes the differences from when he went as a child to taking his own child, almost pulling that effect away and back to the reality of the situation. He also makes several parallels to his father and him as a father, showing how time won’t change traditions. “On Keeping a Notebook” Joan Didion

S This piece of writing is based upon the importance of keeping a notebook you yourself personally can remember what, where, and why something had happened. O “ On Keeping a Notebook” occurred as Joan Didion expresses her thoughts and morals on various matters. In her writing, Joan had received her old notebook from her childhood a year before she wrote this, which possibly could have prompted her to write about and explain the importance “On Keeping a Notebook” A Joan aimed her attention at the specific audience of people who they themselves keep notebooks and wonder if they should write a notebook. Explaining that it is worth it for the personal gain and feeling of past experiences. P The purpose of Didion writing this piece is to show people that to keep a notebook is very beneficial to oneself. That the ability to look at a piece of cut off sentence, and have it bring a whole scenery into the mind is a wonderful thing only captured by that who wrote it down and stored it in those papers of the notebook. S Joan Didion is another lead essayist in America during her time. Just as E.B. White was. Joan conveys herself as an original writer, which may have led her to write the personal piece on keeping a notebook. She may have had personal value to the notebooks themselves, and wanted her readers to understand and think about what it means and what it is like to write your own personal notebook. T Joan Didion has a very straight forward tone. Stating exactly what she wants the audience to take from the passage. A more personal approach is taken by sharing things that she kept inside of her own journal, making the tone more personal to both the author and audience. Joan gives very detailed descriptions making the audience feel as if she saw these things yesterday, giving the “zoom-in” effect. This makes the audience feel as if they were there when it was happening, and also creates a more personal tone to the piece of writing.
