Future recommended actions include quantitative analyses of plaster mixtures with detailed mapping of sulphur concentration, evaluating other pigments present in the structure, and assessing the composition of the exterior plaster. Details on suggested further analyses are given in the final section of each Chapter (refer to Sections 2.2, 3.3, 4.3 and 5.6).

Pun Uk Mansion Preliminary Investigation of Architectural Finishes Architectural Conservation Laboratory HKU Faculty of Architecture - July 2018 2 1 Introduction Pun Uk is a 1930s modern historic Hakka mansion located in Yuen Long, New Territories, Hong Kong. Pun Uk mansion has outstanding scientific value that can advance our understanding and appreciation of the Hakka culture. The form, materials and design of the structure contribute significantly to the scientific value, but the rarity of this type of building in an urban area of Hong Kong along with original architectural features almost completely untouched by restoration make Pun Uk even more significant. Pun Uk exhibits a richness in decorative techniques that appear to have been carefully and skilfully crafted and remain in fair to good condition. Even though some features have deteriorated, they are unchanged in most areas (never or minimally painted over). The structure is a sprawling, single-story building with a large footprint (over 600 m 2 or 6500 ft 2 ). A grand Entrance Porch is located at the front and centre of the home, which faces west. The structure is symmetric about a central courtyard with north and south wings, both with their own courtyards, shallow ponds and entry doors. An elaborate altar sits at the centre of the east wall of the home facing the Entrance Hall and Porch. The structural support consists of grey brick with a timber roof frame covered with Chinese roof tiles. Some of the interior door frames appear to be concrete while the main door frames at the western entryways are framed with granite slabs. The doorways connecting the side courtyards to the main hallway are arched, and typical interior doorways are rectangular openings with wooden doors. Floors also appear to be cast concrete with stamped patterns in the Entrance Hall. A concrete ledge is at the perimeter of the building, indicating a possible concrete stem wall and foundation. Building finishes include plaster, painted surfaces, painted timber, wood carvings and plaster reliefs. Previous repairs are obvious around windows, doorframes, and interior walls. Some polymeric waterproofing material has been employed to fill in cracks in the interior plaster. A more detailed description of the building and construction details is included in the architectural appraisal, and this report focuses on plaster and paint finish material compositions. 1.1 Report Outline and Architectural Finishes Overview At the current moment, a comprehensive investigation and analysis of the painting and plastering materials and techniques applied at Pun UK mansion cannot be carried out due to budget constraints.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
