people die from diarrhoea; 90% of these deaths are among children, mostly in third world countries (WHO 2020). Malaria, another health concern, is one of the most critical public health issues posing detrimental risks to the lives of children, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Mosquitoes in their most likely contaminated or stagnant water habitats are the primary source of this disease (Journal of Advanced Research 2020). Every year there are about 300 to 500 million cases of malaria worldwide and about 1 million child fatalities. Another human infection that is water-borne is typhoid fever. Infected persons can experience symptoms including nausea, abdominal pain, headaches and fever. According to the World Health Organization (2016), typhoid fever annually affects 21 million people and causes 222,000 deaths worldwide. The transmission of this disease primarily occurs through the consumption of contaminated food and water. In addition to diarrhoea, malaria and typhoid, cholera is also a threatening disease that results from contaminated water. Cholera is infectious and often fatal. This virulent disease, remains a global threat to human health. Researchers have estimated that every year, there are roughly 1.3 to 4.0 million cases, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera (WHO 2020). Water pollution is a universal concern and the world’s population is facing the worst results of polluted water. Along with the detrimental effects on human health, economic fallout is another downside of water pollution. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the most devastating economic fallout from water pollution occurs in four main areas. These are cost of treating drinking water, losses to tourism (swimming, snorkelling, boating), damage to commercial fishing and shellfish harvests along with lower real estate values.

4 THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION Firstly, pollution increases the price for treating water. Since more resources and energy are required to filter and clean polluted water, the cost of doing so escalates. Secondly, the tourism industry is heavily impacted by water contamination. It is reported that almost one billion dollars in revenue is lost each year in tourism as a result of water pollution (US EPA 2020). Additionally, the lack of biodiversity as a result of contaminated water gives rise to destinations becoming more polluted and unattractive to tourists. Thirdly the acidification of the ocean threatens shellfish life. Water that is highly acidic causes corrosion of the shells of these shellfish resulting in slower growth and even death of these animals . This creates the loss of billions of dollars to the shellfish industry. In many parts of the world, acidification and pollution also pose a threat to coral reefs. Coral reefs support the life cycle
