5 A Lesson Before Dying TEACHER’S COPY STUDY GUIDE Chapter Five 1. Briefly describe Grant’s school. Grant’s school is housed in the church on the Pichot plantation. He teaches students from six to thirteen years old, and all of the first six grades are in one large room. The students’ desks are the benches used as pews on Sundays, and his desk is the worship table. Heat comes from a central wood stove and ventilation arrives by way of a window in each of the four walls. Three blackboards hang beside three religious pictures on the walls. 2. How does Grant discipline his students? Grant disciplines by harshly whacking students with his Westcott ruler, belittling them in front of their classmates, and forcing them to do more work. 3. What kind of lives do his students have? As Grant looks down the row of houses in the Quarter close to the school, he sees the homes of most of the students at his school. One, for example, comes from a home with a violent father, pregnant sister, and a mentally challenged brother; Another has a mother who works all day in the fields and an old grandmother, who does all the cooking and work for the extended families. 4. What is Grant’s subject for the lecture he delivers that day? Grant tells his students about Jefferson’s sentence and the job he (Grant) has been asked to do. He insists that making Jefferson into a man is the same job as he has been attempting right there in his classroom. He frightens them with the vivid facts and threatens that they, too, will end up like Jefferson unless they get serious about their learning. 5. What is the message that is delivered to Grant at the end of the afternoon? Farrell Jarreau, Henri Pichot’s handyman, arrives to tell Grant that it will be fine to come up to the Pichot mansion that evening at 5:00.

When does he actually get to talk to Pichot and Sheriff Guidry? Grant arrives ten minutes before his 5:00 appointment, but he has to wait to speak with Sheriff Guidry until after 7:00. 2. Why does Grant refuse to sit down or take any supper while he is waiting? Inez offers Grant both a place to sit and his dinner, but Grant refuses both. He is still angry about being there in the first place, and he does not want to take anything from these people. He also remembered how his aunt and Miss Emma had stood during their visit; they had not been invited to sit. Grant, decides that he will also remain standing.
