12. In the Dark Knight Returns, Batman himself is considered a symbol because he represents justice and he shows the people of Gotham that the power is in their hands and they can resist the violence and criminals of the city. Batman ultimately does not care about fighting crime; he cares only for justice, and will do whatever it takes to achieve it even it means the rights of the accused are trampled. The return of Batman symbolizes the decrease in crime rates and also introduces a group of his followers that are standing up to crime. 19. According to Foster, geography means any setting or detail that has to do with the character or characters and their surroundings. Foster writes, “Geography can also define or even develop a character” (Foster 167). In the Dark Knight Returns, the setting was in Gotham City, a city where criminals run amok, and a gang called the Mutants terrorizes Gotham City. The city was dark and filled with crime and corruption even before Batman retired. Batman was born out of Gotham when Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents get murdered by a thug in the streets. All the crime and injustice in Gotham cause Bruce Wayne to become Batman and not show mercy on the criminals that run around the city. After retiring, the city’s crime rates increase until Bruce Wayne can no longer take it and decides to put his cape back on and stop the crime once and for all.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
