Louisiana – slave state 2. Indiana – free state NW territory 3. Mississippi – slave state 4. Illinois – free state NW territory 5. Alabama- slave state In February 1819 Missouri petitioned to become a slave state... if allowed in it would thrust slavery further north And Give slave state 2 vote advantage in the senate Slavery in the north New York has the highest % “anti-slavery in the north” Most northerner not interested with slaves in the south...they didn’t care Fear of north that if slavery ended in the south the freed slaves would move up here in the north and take all of our jobs. “economic fear” when Missouri applied to congress. Huge debate is the geographic reason 1. suggestion – admit Missouri as a slave state, and then free the slaves(emancipate) 2. Missouri Compromise – henry clay speaker of the house said, “why don’t we tie admission of Missouri as admitting Maine as free state” so it's like equally balanced 3.
