person must spend and waste. This was in 1920s, is America really all that different today? Aren’t the commercials aimed at our interests and not our needs? Bok goes on to say that American schools did not really aim to teach him the English language or help him. One of my favorite quotes form Bok’s excerpt is “…for what happens in America in the years to come depends, in large measure, on what is happening to-day in the public schools of this country (Bok 221). This statement really stuck out to me. For America this “City on the Hill” ideal that has been associated with us since the late seventeenth century and it falls incredibly short when it comes to education even in today’s world. Bok just wanted to learn the English language and found that his father was the best teacher not the public schools. Education is one of our lower encouragements for coming to America. We have a great army,

great scientific advancement; we even have great opportunity, but not education. We still, as of today, fall short when it comes to education. Over 100 years ago this was prevalent and yet we still focus on war advancement and how to become the most powerful nation in the world, and yet we forget one key component, knowledge.
