Lecture Seven Question One Many have argued that the role of E.U has been occasional to cement peace in Europe, not to the level of being honored with the Nobel Peace Prize as witnessed in 2012. The Franco- German solidarity after WWII played a high profile role in integrating Europe (Dinan, 1999). Six countries were embroiled in the formation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. Apart from France and Germany, Luxembourg, the Dutch, Italians and Belgians shared a common goal of developing their economies by mutually utilizing their coal and steel resource, to curb any threat of war. When the European Economic Community (EEC) was created in 1957, an even greater economic and political integration between members was achieved. Since there also existed an open confrontation between the Soviet Union and the U.S which would

ASSESSMENT ITEM 1 9 potentially undermine European recent peace achievements, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) deterred nuclear threat through its policy on military action against aggressors. Question Two A major disconnection in the E.U and the U.S geopolitics arises from the economic challenges. In most European countries, the levels of income equality are fairly low compared to U.S. Economies opened up to allow citizens to share the benefits of globalization, fostered by calls for closer cooperation between nations (Kagan, 2004). Conversely, less benefits have been accrued in the case of the U.S and to some extent the U.K. Only few people have profited, living societies in distinct polarization and deep discontentment. U.S has revealed itself as a protectionist and possibly antagonistic at the world stage, excising excessive caution when engaging with foreign states such as the recent withdrawal from the Paris agreement. As the largest trading bloc in the world and with the exception of the U.K’s Brexit, the E.U rides on the ability to contain populism, demonstrated in the Dutch and French recent elections. Question Five The prosperity currently enjoyed by the E.U is directly under the threat of the mass support of populism. Economic inequality is perceived as a consequence of electoral behavior. The masses feel chocked by the eroding organized labor, shrinking welfare, immigration issues and inflow of refugees that stiffens competition for capital. Poorer white populations have emerged, which blame authorities for this deprivation and have backed populist movements that share the same economic insecurity and deprivation ideology. In turn, populist movements headed by charismatic leaders who claim to represent the majority views. Since they are uncompromising, they are opposed to addressing their issues through the EU and claim that

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
