D Out of the choices, revenue per employee is the best measure since it limits the number of ways the measure could be manipulated or compromised due to interpretation. 3. A The best practice is the customer reward program example since it focuses on satisfaction in addition to repeat customer visits. All other choices are unethical or bad business practices. PROBLEMS – Unit 11.3 Problem 1 Retail Corporation prides itself on good service to its customers. One measure it evaluates is the number of customers in line at any point in time. This is interrelated to the amount of transactions that a cashier has to process in rush hour periods of time. Required A. Identify how the metrics associated with these benchmarks may be problematic for employees of Retail Corporation. B. Should an employee be disciplined or fired for not achieving benchmarks? Explain. Solution Problem 1 A. The metric(s) could be problematic if Retail’s customers have higher item counts than industry averages identify or if special classes of customers, such as the elderly, who may need more time to present items and make payments. In addition, even fast cashiers can exceed the maximum customers if the manager closes too many lanes. B. It is inappropriate for a cashier to be fired if there are occasional instances in which his or her performance falls outside of a benchmarking measure. Continued problems may require reassigning or terminating the employee if other employees are performing at the benchmark level. Appendix MEASURES OF MEETING DELIVERY EXPECTATIONS
