Scenario 3 Physician : Mrs. Brown, I have gone over your blood work. Your lipids are not where they need to be. So I want you to start taking Atorvastatin to get those in place. I also want you to monitor your fat intake. We will see you back here in 3 months for a follow up. See you then, bye. Patient : I don’t understand what he said. What is good cholesterol? And what are lipids? Can you explain that to me?

MA : No problem. Lipids are what you would call ‘fats’ that are in your bloodstream. Some are good for the body and this is your ‘good’ cholesterol. Others are bad for the body and this is your ‘bad’ cholesterol. So it is important to get enough good and bad ‘fats’ when you eat. If you aren’t getting those the doctor will prescribe some medicine to help counteract with the ‘fats’ you are eating. That is why he is having you take Atorvastatin. One way to help with this is by watching what ‘fats’ you are eating. Good fats are peanuts, walnuts, almonds and pistachios, avocado, canola and olive oil, salmon and fish oil, as well as corn and sunflower oils. Bad fats are meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil, fried food, microwaved popcorn, as well as vegetable shortening and hard stick margarine – fast food is usually not good for you. So eat the good fats and stay away from the bad fats.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
