Northern Securities Case – NS is a RR company owned by JP Morgan and James Hill, and Taft uses the Sherman Act to break it up. The Supreme Court agrees with TR, and he goes on to break up even more trusts. 28. Ida Tarbell – muckraker, attacks Standard oil is her book, the History of the Standard Oil Company 29. Hepburn Act – strengthens the ICC, brings them control over RR rates 30. Mann Act – prohibited prostitution and human trafficking. 31. Clayton Anti-Trust Act – passed by Woodrow, made interlocking directories illegal, exempted labor unions for anti-trust legislation, added teeth to the previous Anti-Trust Act. 32. Payne Aldrich Tariff – passed by Taft, even though it doesn’t lower tariff rates, and leads to a split in the Republican party. 33. Underwood-Simmons – reduces tariff rates by about 11%, created an income tax over $3000. 34. Ballinger-Pinchot – Taft’s out saving millions of acres, but he angers TR when he dismisses the Head of Forestry, Gifford Pinchot. 35. 16 th amendment – Congress can levy an income tax 36. 17 th amendment – direct election of senators 37. 18 th amendment – prohibition 38. 19 th amendment – woman’s suffrage 39.
