In today’s increasingly competitive employment environment, would you expect to find many(or any) employers taking a philosophy-laden approach?A philosophy-laden company has no unions, but the lack of organizing is because of theorganizations employee relations climate. Management engages in human resource practicesit believes are right. These companies are essentially invulnerable to unionization becausetheir employment practices are more attractive to their employees than those unions typicallyadvocate and are able to negotiate. Union organizing activities in these firms are basicallynonexistent. Union organization has a negative correlation on shareholder returns. Whichmeans they could argue that because of increased competition, companies cannot afford suchstrategies that could result in costly employee benefits, and instead focus on other means toprevent unionization.
