However, religious and political opponents of evolution argue that because evolutionary theory cannotexplainhowlife began it is inherently flawed. Some propose alternative perspectives for theorigin of life. Creationism for example is based on the belief that all life on Earth is divinelycreated. Although there is a diversity of views within Christianity, Judaism and Islam, mostcreationists support their ideas with evidence from religious texts and scriptures. Intelligentdesign is a related concept. It is based on the notion that all life was created by a supernaturalbeing or intelligent designer. Even though proponents of intelligent design tend to avoid usingevidence taken from spiritual or religious texts, some scholars regard this as a politicallymotivated attempt to reconcile science and religion. In contrast to these perspectives, Buddhist traditions do not have a creation story. The basicteaching is that throughout the history of life on Earth there has been a series of evolutionaryevents. In Hinduism there also seems to be less conflict when compared to monotheisticreligious traditions. According to the ancient Hindu rishis, the basic understanding is that allphenomena which occur in nature, including evolution, are displays of God’s sovereignintelligence.Theistic evolution which is the official position adopted by the Catholic Church is arguablysomewhere in the middle on this continuum. It is based on the belief that evolution was set inmotion by the hand of God and one may therefore accept that humans are indeed a product ofevolution.Using this as a cue, reflect on your own perceptions and aspirations to become anarchaeologist. What is your response to the assignment question? Share your thoughts aboutwhether or not you think one can be a person of faith and believe in evolution.
