poem displays the idea that when an innocent individual pays less attention to the little things that others do for them, as well as the kindness a person gives to others, it can put a strain on their relationship. In the poem, “Those Winter Sundays”, the author uses rhyme and rhythm to further establish understanding in the text. This poem contains fourteen lines, therefore, this verse is an example of a sonnet, without end rhyme and lacking a consistent rhythm. There still are some rhymes and near-rhymes but no rhyme scheme. The author did this purposefully to show the fragmented point of view of the child. To deliver its power, the poem’s meaning depends upon the modifications between what the boy knew then and what the man understands now. Following that, Hayden skillfully uses deep and powerful imagery to convey his emotions. By not giving direct statements but letting the reader determine what was implicit in the lines therefore making a living picture of that event in his or her mind. The use of imagery is evident when he states, “ cracked hands that ached from labor”, it helps the reader invest more, mentally into the reading.
