teleconferencing, promotion of multidisciplinary participation and being focused on the task. Studies show a positive correlation between participation in a shared governance and an increase in employee engagement scores (Nantz, 2015). The necessary process is to drive this change to include an improvement in staff retention and empowerment as well as an increase in patient satisfaction metrics. To implement this change, a governance council will be elected from frontline staff who are engaged and interested in being involved in decision making that affects clinical practice on their unit. Once individuals have been identified, nurse leaders will ensure

The council will meet monthly to explore and present idea(s) and solicit solutions from their peers to develop a best practice initiative. Once identified and ready for review and implementation the governance will present the guidelines to the Unit Director, Manager, and Nurse Educators to discuss the implementation and roll out the required training to the rest of the required staff. This will ensure that all staff that needs to be involved has the proper training and knowledge to adopt and abide by the new process. Collaboration and expected outcomes will be communicated to the frontline staff. After all training has been developed and provided, implementation and monitoring can begin. HCAHPS metrics will be monitored pre and post implementation quarterly to determine effectiveness. The results will be discussed with the staff to see how their adoption and implementation of the new process has affected HCAHPS and employee engagement. When staff realize that they can be involved in the decision making and have a direct positive effect on the outcome chances are they will continue to be engaged as well as encourage their peers to participate as well as take ownership and accountability for their actions.
