Final Exam Notes First try early miscarriage Gave birth at Stony Brook with a Doulla Had C-section Baby girl Name is on birth certificate Pumped 2 weeks did not breast feed Girlfriend got back with her during pregnancy after break up Best part of it is knowing Marlon now has a child Worst part physical pain of C-section Note taking 2 nd Half of class 4/26 (2 nd half) Surrogacy! [we had Poppy come in!] International surrogacy o Recall: the 15-min documentary we watched last week about a couple from Australian sought and received international surrogacy Back then, implanting multiples would happen because it increases the chance of getting pregnant o BUT having multiples also increase the risk of the pregnancy itself One surrogate ended up carrying 5 (one with heart defect), refused the payment, because she said it was a gift IVF! o (recap) we are getting better at it! ? so now we don’t really implant one or two Success rates: factors! o Age of mother o Age of the egg ? if mother is not older, they might get implanted with a bit more embryos Selective Reduction o When you have multiples, it’s less likely to have them be carried full term o So we don’t keep them all As age goes up, harder to get pregnant, also easier to have miscarriage o Risk of Down syndrome, too o 40: 1/100 49: 1/10 Age of a woman = age of her egg (egg slightly older) PGD: Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis o to see if the embryo carries something that is “not good” IVF, PGD ? are we having too much control? A couple had a baby with Down Syndrome ? found out after the birth o Father written extensively of the joy that this baby brought to the baby

Final Exam Notes Afraid that people would prevent that from happening New Eugenics o Reproductive technology…? o “We want this, we don’t want this….” Reading: Finding a doctor who support IVF screening (PGD) before implanting o Screen out disease…. What about gender? o Some countries, doctors don’t necessarily want to do the screening Classmate sharing: o Pregnancy of her youngest son – issues with his back/bone o Suffocating Down syndrome kid (?) These are technologies. It’s the way we use them that really make them “good” or “bad” A woman’s husband is in the military o They put some sperms away because he has cancer o He dies o She wants to get pregnant with the sperm o She gets two!

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
