The reality of war during the Great War was especially brutal. New weapons made killing more efficient for those who were able (and in some cased, willing against morale grounds) to utilize them. Poison gas used in the trenches was the most horrific of the new more "efficient" ways to kill, though these increases in efficiency were not limited to poisonous gas. The concept of total war influenced the overall outcome for cultural change and the effects for more advanced weapons. Examine how the death toll of the Great War changed the cultures of the belligerents, using a detailed example World War I was without doubt the most terrifying and psychologically damaging war in the history of Western Europe at the time of its conclusion. The death toll and casualty rates were staggering: ten million fighting men had perished, in addition to another ten million civilians, combined with the twenty million human beings who were permanently and grievously wounded in the war.
