The aim of this experiment was to perform a method of recrystallization to “clean up” a sample of acetanilide and create a pure sample. The melting point was also determined for the crude and pure form of acetanilide and compared to the melting point of benzoic acid. Recrystallization is used in most organic compounds to separate other solid impurities before synthesizing them. By recrystallizing the sample of acetanilide, a sample of it’s pure form is created and can be compared to that of the original sample, in terms of mass and melting point for this procedure.

Hichkad, 1 During the dissolution process, a few observations were noted. When the acetanilide solution was heating, the sand sunk to the bottom, initializing the separation, and the solution appeared frothy as well. A Hirsh funnel was used to recover the pure sample of acetanilide after separation of sand, NaCl, and other small solutes so that nothing was left behind except for the acetanilide. When determining the melting point of the crude and pure samples, benzoic acid was used to calibrate the apparatus so that the samples could be compared. A couple of human errors should be noted. When the heated solution was quickly transferred to the other flask, a few grains of sand fell into the flask, which ultimately caused the pure acetanilide to be slightly impure. There may have
