- 30 years old- may 1521- was serving as an officer defending the fortress of the town of Pamplona against the French- severely injured during battle and spent months healing - French took him back to recuperate at home - did a lot of reading- books on the life of Christ and the Saints- the more he read, the more he considered the lives of the saints- after reading, he felt at peace - beginning of his conversion, and his spiritual discernment - wrote “Spiritual Exercises”- helped people recognize that in addition to intellect, emotions and feelings can allow us to discover the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives-
