3 The Imperialism Courier—April 11, 1915 By Cesare Pampena—Editor & Reviser As you read through these events, you may have developed a feeling that imperialism is simply the new norm of an evolv- ing society. However, this is not always the case. While the Europeans are primarily driving out African natives and expanding the range of European cultures and practices, it is evident that there were positive impacts due to imperialism. This includes the fact that Ethiopia was able to maintain its culture despite a long and paralyzing battle. Throughout India, modernization has been leav- ing a notable mark on the world. This is especially true because Ram Mohun Roy’s ideas of revamping laws regarding marriage and other important issues. In fact, India in some ways welcomed the idea of imperialism because of a wide array of reasons. In Nigeria, a treaty was signed that agreed to let the British reside in their nation. And in many areas of Africa, European colonialism led to the introduction of modern medical facilities, educational institutions, as well as increased life expectancy rates. When the Africans were subject to imperialism, their goods and products were considered to have a decent market value, boosting the economy. Advanced infrastructure was also constructed across the globe thanks to the expertise that the Europeans carried. This includes the Panama Canal in Latin America, complex network of railways and communication net- works in Africa, as well as the evolution of the economy in the United States. In the United States, while imperialism did result in se- vere changes in agriculture such as the rising prices of sugar in Hawaii, the economic impact was largely worth the invasion. With the construction of the Panama Canal, the United States experienced an economic boom with the collection of fares from commercial shipping vessels. But overall, the actions brought out by Imperialism were mixed and forever changed the cultural and economic conditions of the world.
