Through her exploration, we the reader get to know her better by understanding the views and beliefs of the times and her personal struggle against conformity. Girl, Interrupted is an autobiography memoir. The reasons for the memoir’s success as a genre is that readers felt an intense and personal identification with the book’s narrator, and because the book was labeled as true, they assumed that connection extended to the author as well. Kaysen’s memoir, with its scans of her actual medical records, felt very aesthetic. self. “Actually it was only the part that wanted to kill myself i wanted to kill” (Kaysen 37) she speaks calmly on situations that most would have difficulty mentioning. Kaysen does a significant job at showing life inside of a mental hospital and society's interpretation of mental illness. She questions her sanity many times and often questions the reader's sanity. “Was everybody seeing this stuff and acting as though they weren’t?... If some people didn’t see these things, what was the matter with them? Were they blind or something?” (Kaysen 41-42) she very frequently questions society as a whole. Her purpose can be translated to the audience by discovering the true definition of mental illness. Work Cited
