though PETA has not been linked to any crimes, public records show that they have made donations to Rodney Coronado, a serial arsonist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory (The Center for Consumer Freedom, 2008). This philosophy of animal liberation revealed in 2006 the euthanasia of 97.4% of animals in PETA shelters. These high percentages did not drop below 90 percent from 2006 to 2011. It has only been since 2012 the rates dropped, but not any lower than 80 percent (VDACS Online Animal Reporting, n.d.). Due to these high percentages, the VDAC considered changing PETA’s status from “shelter” to “euthanasia clinic.” Other Virginia animal shelters average a lower kill rate of 44 percent, so why can’t PETA? Some have speculated that Ingrid Newkirk and her methods for animal liberation are to blame (McWilliams, 2012). PETA also opposes the no-kill movement. The no-kill movement protects animals from euthanasia unless they are terminally ill. This has led to moral conflict within PETA’s ranks. To many people, PETA is a friend to the animal world. They have made many strides against animal abuse and contributed to their welfare. The majority of their supporters believe in their cause without knowing how far they would go for animal liberation.
