TOMAZOS WINTER 2020 CHEM 181 - Imp for people who cannot metabolize sugar properly, people who have diabetes. - People who use this is to control their caloric intake. - The use of artificial sweetener does not help with losing weight. - People who took this artificial sweetener use it as an excuse to take the sugars from other sources. (end up craving sugar and eat more other sugar compounds so it defeats the purpose) - Most people do not need to switch to foods with artificial sweeteners, need to change your total caloric intake and not depend on these sweeteners. TOMAZOS WINTER 2020 CHEM 181 o Take up co2 and produce o2 and all of the chemicals that make up the plant o We eat plants...indirectly even, through animals. - Agricultural Science: o Based on photosynthesis o We would not have enough food to eat o Not a lot of farmers, 70% of ppl were involved in farming back in the day, now o only 2% of the world provide food for us... o It goes a long way...as time passed, developments were instituted, agriculture o got better, population grew. o Population grew, needed more agriculture. Back then wasn't able to do this but o now in days it is easier with technology o Modern fertilizer and pesticides, can produce vegetables of all kinds and arrays o of fruits...BUT... o People worry about some of the agriculture techniques we are using .... - Pesticides: o Designed to kill pests, weeds, fungi, etc. o Small amount of chemicals to control bugs won't harm us...??? Or are they .... - Want to put an end to genetic engineering --> very often without looking at risk: benefit ratio about properly. o We have trouble feeding everyone in the world .... as population grows, harder to feed them. o We cannot produce enough food without pesticides and fertilizer. - Organic: o Growing crops without using synthetic fertilizer and pesticides. Relying on natural means to control insects... o Use manure as fertilizer...but not enough manure in the world. - Fertilizer: o Justus Von Liebeg (1803-1873) looked at fertilizer carefully o He asked a question "what is really in manure for crops to grow?" o Figured out various types of nutrients needed to grow o Came to conclusion, 4 major nutrients needed N (Nitrogen), P(Phosphorus), K(Potassium) and various other o elements needed in small amounts o Go to store where fertilizers are sold, look at vast array of fertilizer available, each of them have 3 numbers, have ratios of N, P, K because diff plants require diff ratios o
