COGNITIVE ABILITY TESTING: GOOD & BAD Good: Cognitive ability is one of the best predictors of job performance r = .23 - .58 Cognitive ability tests can be administered quickly, and in group formats, making them cost effective . Bad: Cognitive ability tests demonstrates significant group differences between racial/ethnic groups . Why? – a variety of factors including confounding variables (e.g., social inequities), the test itself.

PHYSICAL ABILITY TESTS: GOOD & BAD For jobs that require physical ability, these tests have demonstrated that they improve prediction of performance . They are high in face validity – especially for actual work sample (e.g, Firefighter example). Group differences exist between ______. Women tend to be more flexible, but due to physiological differences, Men tend to have greater muscular strength and stamina.

PERSONALITY TESTS Screen-out tests → Identify psychopathology Best known example is the MMPI Measures psychopathologies such as schizophrenia, paranoia, social deviance, lack of acceptance of authority "I wake up with a headache almost every day"; "I certainly feel worthless sometimes"; "I have had peculiar and disturbing experiences that most other people have not had” May only be administered after offer of employment Why?
