Vincent Mangano, a founding member of The Commission and an original gangster of the Five Families, was appointed the head of the Mineo Family. Mangano believed in the core values of the old Sicilian Mafia, believing that respect and honor rules above business dealings ("Vincent Mangano," n.d.). This belief system led Mangano to feud with Albert Anastasia, Mangano’s underboss. In 1951, Vincent Mangano disappeared without a trace and was never found. Mangano’s brother and right-hand man Philip Mangano was murdered the same day Vincent disappeared. Anastasia became the boss of the Mineo Family and was suspected to haveorganized the disappearance and murder of the brothers. Anastasia renamed the Family to the Anastasia Family (Albert Anastasia Biography, n.d.).Anastasia was head of the Anastasia Family for only a short time before being assassinated on October 25, 1957. A brief power struggle ensued within the Anastasia Family. The rise of the Gambino family began in 1957 at which time it was believed that Carlo Gambino orchestrated the assassination on Albert Anastasia to gain control of the family[Gam10]. Carlo Gambino was eventually officially appointed the head of the Anastasia Family by The Committee. It was later that Gambino renamed the Family to The Gambino Crime Family and completely restructured their organization. The Federal Bureau of Investigations later admitted that Carlo Gambino’s restructuring of his crime family made identifying the leaders extremely difficult compared to the other Families. The Gambino Crime Family did not have one Underboss but two. In fact, Carlo Gambinodid not operate the Gambino Crime Family as a single organization but as two fully independent organizations operating under his command. One underboss, Aniello Dellacroce, was in charge of all hands-on operations such as; murder for hire, extortion, hijacking, and robberies. While underboss Paul Castellano was in charge of crimes like fraud, union racketeering, and

6construction ("1976: Funeral of Mafia Boss Held in NY", 2014). The Gambino Crime Family eventually rose to become the most powerful criminal organization in the world. In recent years, the Gambino Crime Family was found to be a fraction of what it once was; operating on little income. Each crime boss that operated in the last 30 years has been or is in jail for criminal charges, and the majority of the families leadership is conducted by officers also known as Capos. In February 2008, the Gambino family administration, and other lower ranking members were indicted on charges of racketeering charges[Dav15]. The Gambino family also received drug charges after a two-year drug operation revealed the trafficking of drugs from South America to Europe and throughout the United States. Seven men were arrested in the 2012 drug bust for the trafficking of cocaine and heroin that were tied to the Gambino crime family[Dav15].
