Impact of Social Media and Social Networking on its Evolution The advent of the Internet, Web 2.0, and mobile technologies has changed the way the companies now do business. We have entered a new era in the business world, an era where all communications are driven by everything social. From Facebook to Twitter and LinkedIn to all the other various social media outlets, almost every business now has an online presence using many of these different methods to advertise and communicate with their respective customer bases. Through social media, customers have an almost instantaneous voice that can be used to reach out to businesses to talk about their ideas and experiences.

Group Project – Grocery Delivery Service 11 We currently live in a world that consists of a vast network of connected devices (one billion people connected to the Internet and four billion mobile phones), information travels quickly from person-to-person at a rate that has never been seen before. Right now, there are four hundred million people sharing billions of pieces of information about their personal experiences each week via social media outlets. With this kind of exposure, it is no wonder that almost every business in the world today is also connected on these same networks to reach out to new and current customers every day. There has been much attention and research allotted over the past few years into using social media to create a new form of communication for businesses and customers. Using social media to make the customer feel more important to the business is becoming more of the norm with each passing day. However, the impact social media has to change customer behaviors and perceptions and how social media can impact a professional’s decision making process can sometimes be overlooked and one must be wary of this concept. (Wood, 2010) Impact on Business Operations Social media can have a great impact on how our business will operate. It will allow our business to reach out more effectively to a broader target audience in a more cost savings and effective manner than that of traditional means. Let’s face it, hardly anyone writes letters anymore, electronic communication is preferred. Conversation records are more easily kept in this fashion, with that being said, many businesses now prefer to communicate with its suppliers and customers alike via social media. With social media, they can send private messages to their suppliers, public messages to their customers, informing them on new items that will be coming to the store. Or perhaps details of a sale that is coming up. This information can be relayed to all
