Hypothetical from TCSVM faculty Two women brought in a 13 yr old SF cocker spaniel with a 2 cm mast cell tumor over the shoulder. The tumor was slowly increasing in size. Surgery was recommended and the prognosis for cure was good. The older woman was in her mid 80s and somewhat frail.

Hypothetical The younger woman, probably in her late 50s was her daughter. The dog belonged to the mother, but both seemed committed to the dog.

Hypothetical A few hours after the dog was left in the hospital, the daughter called. She explained that her mother was coming to live with her and her husband and that there was no way that they could take care of the dog as well as her mother. She asked me to euthanize the dog and tell her mother that it died in surgery.
