If a bystander knows that other people are present, they will assume that someone has already taken action to the situation (Darley and Latané, 1968). In the Ge novese case, bystanders were known of other onlookers by seeing other people’s lights on and peering outside their window (Lemann, 2014). Given the presence of other observers, one can ratio nalize their own silence that “someone must have already called for help” (Darley and Latané, 1968).
