Roman Political Structure in the Republic American system and Roman system compared: o Mos maiorum Romans was established by this The custom/way of the elders When they think what powers they should have, we look at what  the past did. However in US system, we look at constitution to  see what does what. o Collegiality Roman system was set up that no one magistrates can affect  change throughout the entire system. (checks and balances)  Cooperation of his colleagues.  o Tripartite— executive/judicial/legislative (American) magistrates/senate (post-magistrate)/ assembly (voted on) (look  below)

Roman system was tripartite: o Elected officials (magistrates) o Senate (all ex-magistrates, usually around 300 men) o Assemblies (4 types, all male citizens, sorted in various ways Roman Magistrates o What is a magistrate? Honos Cursus honorum o Income and its sources determined 1. Ability to run for office 2. Voting order in the Assemblies o Annually elected officials Consul (2) ( imperium)( command the army) Supreme civil and military command Both equal Acts as general of the army Convene most but not all the assemblies Praetor (6) ( imperium) Chief legal official. Chief judge Aedile (4) In charge of public  works/buildings/order/temples/markets/grain  supply/games (gotta spend their own money)

Quaestor (20) Treasurers/finances/money/ And also tribune of the plebs (10) Happened when plebians succeded Sacro santitas —Sacred holiness Personal invialbility They cannot be physically interfered with Can veto any act by any other magistrates except a  dictator. Elections laws and decrees of the senate. Can  veto each other. Hand over hand over hand scenario Can call in the plebian assembly and propose laws Appointed Officials: Censor (2, every 5 years) (maintain a list/roster and move  u in the social class): Dictator (1 in an emergency, for 6 months) Elections: every year. Different types of assemblies elected different types of  officials
