Letter Robert Sidney ( after Earl of Leicester) to Edm. Molyneux. Good Mr. Mullinax, I pray yow sett doune in Writing the Reasons why her Maiestie showlde erect the O ce I sue for. Yow must doe it in good Terms, for it is to be shewed to her Maiestie. I pray yow lett me heare quickly from yow, for the Queene will be spoken to, very shortly about it. Farewell. Court, this Sonday ,  . Yours assuredly , Robert Sidney. ³⁷ In the letters of the Sidney brothers, how the language constructs the power di ff erence between the master’s sons and servant is unambigu- ous: they speak with the master’s voice, an unequivocal language of command. Any contest for power between the servant and the son that may underlie Philip Sidney’s explosive accusation is not acknowledged in the stylistic inscription here of the power relation. The forms of civility unambiguously assert social di ff erence and, insofar as they sum- mon a response, demand asymmetrical markers of di ff erence. Relevant here is Angel Day’s explanation, in his letter-writing manual The English Secretary , that a noble personage writing to his inferior should not ‘‘with ouer large entreatie be charged, but rather with fewer speeches, and lesse circumstances to demaunde what hee purposeth.’’ ³⁸ In striking contrast is Mary Sidney’s style for issuing directions to Molyneux. In letters and , Mary Sidney instructs Molyneux on how he should convince the Lord Chamberlain to make an extra room available at Hampton Court for Sir Henry, on the occasion of his recall in  from his post in Ireland. Letter Lady Mary Sydney to Edmund Mollineux, Esq ; Molenox , I thoght good to put you in Remembrance to moue my Lord Chamberlein, in my Lords Name, to haue some uther Roome then my Chamber, for my Lord to haue his Resort unto, as he was woont to haue; or ells my Lord wilbe greatly trubled, when he shall haue enny Maters of Dispache: My Lodginge, you see, beinge very lytle, and my sealfe continewaly syke, and not able to be mouche out of my Bed. For the Night Tyme, on Roofe, with Gods Grace, shall serue vs; for the Day Tyme the Quen will louke to haue my Chamber always in a Redines, for her Maiesties Cominge thether; and thoghe my Lorde him sealfe cann be no Impediment thearto by his owen Presens, yet his Lordshipe trustinge to no Playce ells to be provyded for him, wilbe, as I sayd before, trubled for Want of a conuenient Playce, for the Dispache of souche People as  The rhetoric of politeness
