The beginnings of language in infancy and the role of grammar in language development are also discussed. The relationship between language and certain cognitive skills is examined. Signs of the Apes, Songs of the Whales PBS Video, 1983. 57 minutes. For your students who are already familiar with Washoe, here is the sequel: Washoe is visited 10 years later. In this excellent NOVA film, language experiments with chimps, gorillas, dolphins, and sea lions are demonstrated. In addition, the complex signals that whales use for communication are explored. This is a truly superb film. Language Development Annenberg/CPB, 1990. 30 minutes. This program, hosted by Philip Zimbardo, describes language development from its earliest babbling stages, including the genetic and environmental interaction in language development. Cross-cultural similarities in language development are also presented, as well as social communication issues. Language PBS Video, 1990. 30 minutes. Part of "The Mind" series, this excellent video presents the evolution of human language and the phenomenon of speech. It discusses Chomsky's theory of an innate drive for language and demonstrates that linguistic abilities exist even without speech and hearing. You Must of Been a Bilingual Baby Filmmakers Library, 1992. 46 minutes. This program investigates how babies become bilingual, how school children fare in immersion programs, and how adults cope with learning a foreign language. The film presents several bilingual families taking us to a classroom where Spanish- and English-speaking children learn together developing a sense of pride in their cultures. The Human Voice: Exploring Vocal Paralanguage U.C. Extension Center (Berkeley),1993. 30 minutes. This WPA award-winning film explores the power and importance of vocal paralanguage. Vocal paralanguage is what our voice reveals about our gender, age, geographic location, level of education, emotional state, and relationship with the person with whom we are speaking. Intelligence Insight Media, 1990. 30 minutes. This program shows how hard it is to define and measure intelligence. It describes what intelligence tests are designed to measure, the history of IQ testing, and some of its embarrassing failures. The arguments over whether IQ tests show achievement or aptitude and whether IQ is fixed or changeable are presented. Testing and Intelligence Annenberg/CPB, 1990. 30 minutes. From Zimbardo's "Discovering Psychology" series, this video provides excellent coverage of the issues surrounding what intelligence is and how it can be measured by psychologists. The history of IQ testing from Francis Galton to Alfred Binet is presented.
