has been aimed towards women for a long time now, and that concept is taught to girls starting at a young age. In the introduction the book even says, “This cook book is for beginners. The recipes are interesting yet not difficult, and each step is carefully explained… A girl who makes the things in this book, following carefully all instructions, gains enough experience to go on to more complicated dishes.” It specifically tells the reader from the get go that it is not for boys/males to read. It seems inevitable that cookbooks like this would appear. Neuhaus explains: In the early nineteenth century…American society, in the throes of dramatic social changes… sought to redefine the male and female spheres of life and work. No longer linked in mutual struggle against the wilderness to maintain the family farm, men and women increasingly occupied different economies; men joined the market economy whereas women became linked more closely with household duties. (12)
