political, financial, and social environment is at the time. One point that Standage brought up that really stuck with me is the fact that, unlike food, you can authentically share beverages. He goes into how when sharing a drink from the same cup, you are all drinking the same liquid, but when cutting a piece of meat to share, some parts of the animal are more desirable than others. Sharing a drink is a universal symbol of hospitality and friendship. You can still see these values instilled in us today. We will still share a pot of coffee with co-workers, a bottle of wine with friends, or a pot of tea with relatives. To me, it’s incredibly interesting and somewhat endearing that though we can see how much society has changed over the years, we as humans can still subconsciously connect to the idea that if someone shares a drink with you, they trust you and are showing hospitality. With all that being said, I would most definitely recommend this book to one of my peers. It makes you see everyday things in a different light. Though the subject matter might sound a bit obscure at first, it is a topic that, in my opinion, everyone should have the pleasure of knowing about. Though, it’s a given that not everyone is as big of a history nerd as I am, I believe that a great deal of people can genuinely enjoy this book. Who knew that beverages would be so essential to the creation of the society that we know today? They define your status, mark your culture, and bring people together. We should all take into account what beverages are popular today and how they are currently affecting our culture right under our noses. What drinks will be in Standage’s next edition? What is the hypothetical seventh glass? Boba tea? The

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
