exploiting women, and living the life of the rich and famous. The reason is because artists today have different morals than historic ones. Historic musical icons performed for the love of music and to express themselves. Artist today are more financially oriented toward making music because of the profits and power they have. Many musicians are young adult’s icons and are looked at as successful people. For example if you look at the way today’s artist dress there is a direct correlation between that and the way society dressed. I have to admit that I am a victim of this. I see the artist making money and getting female attention. This makes me feel that if I

have a certain look women will be more attracted to me. So what is displayed in the media has a strong impact on how I carry myself and the look I represent. The media is a powerful tool in broadcasting how it would like the society to be shaped. They air programs based on how they would like everyone to conform. It is like a brainwashing tool that plays repetitively until you believe and accept what is shown to you. Like hip-hop and rap it has been aired so much and is uncensored to the point you become desensitized to what is appropriate and what is just. Sex and using women to satisfy a male desire has been explicitly shown so that is has become universally accepted as a societal norm. The older generations in the society can’t believe that this is being allowed to be shown. Many younger people feel that there is nothing wrong and that this is the norm and that the older folk need to get on board with the new day and age. This not only creates an imbalance within the home but it also contributes to children maturing prematurely and becoming increasingly disrespectful to their parents and other adult figures. For 3 years I worked at an after school program with elementary school kids. I tutored them, gave them snacks, did activities with them, and watched them grow. I was very surprised on how mature they were for their age in information that they knew. One girl named Celine was a 5 th grader. She always talked about boys and how she had a boyfriend and that they had a serious relationship. She talked about kissing boys and things I didn’t even think about at that age. I asked her, “Celine where are you learning this stuff from and that this was inappropriate behavior for a ten year old girl.” Her response was “from music videos on BET, MTV, and other friends she had.” This goes to show you this is real stuff. This isn’t made up. Children are growing at a very rapid rate today and maturing faster than children in previous generations because of the media. The young women and young men that are allowed to watch these inappropriate videos think that this portrayal of women is cool and that this isn’t a problem.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
