Self-awareness is very important because it allows people to determine their strengths and
weakness. Knowing one’s own strengths and weaknesses allows leaders and managers to become
better. If a leader or manager finds something that they are weak in, then they could get some
help to help strengthen those weaknesses. If a person has a certain strength, they can teach other
leaders and managers how to become better. A person with strong self-awareness would show
behaviors, such as persistence, self-motivation, optimism, willing to accepts new ideas, flexible,
confident, innovative, and use their powers to motivate and empower others (Scott-Ladd &
Chan, 2004).
For example, in nursing, leaders must be able to assess themselves to have a better understanding
of their own leaderships and styles. Nurses can use tools, such as LEAD instruments, Leader
Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ), Least Preferred Coworker Scale, etc., to assist
them in finding which characteristics they possess and the style that best suits them (Huber,
2010). A good leader would be willing to help his/her co-workers within their scope of practice.
