How do we recognize Design Paradigm? Design Paradigms are found all around us, many yet waiting to be discovered. Natural question comes- how do we encounter with Design Paradigm; it is the discovering of a fundamental truth about the way things work. The paradigm has given us a new way to categorize things we encounter and find a new approach to formulating new ideas. Paradigm as Metaphor In design paradigm, it is related to ‘visual and functional relationships’ . Design Paradigms function as metaphors, used as basis for visual and functional analogies. To answer the above questions a design has to understand several categories- basic forms, functional relationships (such as the way two parts relate to each other) behaviours (such as the ways in which an object can get bigger or smaller). While deciding about the form , paradigm reveals the fundamentals of form. In nature each form is closely associated to its function. Function is one of the most important factors in form . Basic Form- a collection of distinct useful forms; Functional Relationship- mechanism & technique among various parts relate to each other Behaviour- relationship between the changing forms (bigger& smaller, etc.)

Design and Nature Nature is the wealth of design solutions. Many of them are paradigmatic, such as layers of onion (nesting) or the way Kangaroo caries its baby in the pouch. Stacking spoons or dinner plates uses the paradigm of the construction of onion layers. The same principle may be applied in a design process. There are limitations to evolution as a design process though- Nature cannot easily create ‘back up’ ; Design Paradigm constitutes basic forms, techniques, and devices upon which design depends. Nature in normal evolutionary process cannot correct so easily Nature may adjust in the new situation however, which would be a slow process and would require a considerable time Nature’s evolutionary changes may not reproduce the same It is based on available materials and structures; the evolutionary design process is based on the local environmental conditions It cannot look ahead in the design process Natural design evolution cannot transport something from distance. It would only adjust and try to make changes on the locally available material and resources The predictability in the design process is an essential quality that nature cannot provide

Natural process is based on a complex harmonious relationship. The relationship between various living and non-living beings build the delicate but stable structure is the resource of design process.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
