1. Over 100,000 species of diatoms exist making them highly diverse, and the most abundant algae in
the open ocean (Reece et al., 2011).
2. Diatoms are so abundant, they absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, for this reason many
scientists combating the effects of global warming. Scientists are considering this ability of Diatoms as a
potential strategy (Reece et al., 2011).
3. Some algae such as Laminaria, named “Kombu” by the japanese, is used in many popular dishes and
cuisines (Reece et al., 2011).
4. It’s even estimated that 30% of photosynthesis reactions occur within diatoms, algae, and other
protists (Reece et al., 2011).
5. In the Bahamas, red algae has been found at depths of 260m, and depend on water currents to
carry-out their fertilization (Reece et al., 2011).
